The Miami Dehumidification Playbook: Beat the Sticky Air

In Miami, comfort isn’t just temperature—it’s humidity. Aim for 40–55% RH indoors to protect your health, furniture, and the AC system itself. Above 60%, mold and dust mites thrive, and that “Miami summer” smell returns even if your thermostat says 75°F.

Start with no-cost AC tweaks. Set the fan to AUTO (not ON); running the blower nonstop re-evaporates moisture. Ask your tech to verify airflow settings on the air handler—slightly lower CFM can improve latent removal. Use MERV 8–11 filters and change them monthly in rainy season to maintain airflow. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the drain cleanout monthly to keep algae from clogging the condensate line.

When AC alone isn’t enough—common in shoulder seasons or tight condos—add a dehumidifier. Whole-home, inline units pair with your ducts to dry the entire space efficiently. For condos, a ductless mini-split system or a Dry mode can help. If you’re constantly battling 60%+ RH, consider a variable-speed system that runs longer, moisture-grabbing cycles.

Build a mold prevention checklist: fix roof/door/window leaks fast; run bath and kitchen exhausts; keep closet doors slightly open to encourage air movement; and schedule spring tune-ups before rainy season to catch refrigerant or airflow issues. In coastal zones, rinse outdoor coils with fresh water (power off), and ask about anti-corrosion coatings.

For families sensitive to allergies, consider UV lights for coils, higher MERV where ducts allow, and ERVs for controlled ventilation in tight homes. Always validate that higher filtration won’t choke airflow.

Finally, measure what you manage. A smart thermostat with humidity readout or sensor gives you real-time RH. If you’re consistently above target, it’s time to adjust airflow, add dehumidification, or evaluate system sizing.
